Howdy!  It's been a long time since I actively maintained a web-presence, and like the rest of us I've largely migrated over to social media rather than maintaining one of those new-fangled blog things.  But just in case, here's the lowdown:

My name is Gary Weisserman, and I serve as Head of School at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago, Illinois.  Previously, I served as Head of School at Milken Community Schools in Los Angeles, California; as Chief Academic Officer at Scheck Hillel Community Day School in North Miami Beach, Florida; as Head of School and founder of Oakland Early College in Farmington Hills, Michigan; as a faculty member and Director of Early College and K-16 initiatives at the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan-Flint; as the co-founder of Genesee Early College in Flint, Michigan; as a project director and educational game designer at the Interactive Communications and Simulations Group at the University of Michigan; as a teacher at West Bloomfield High School and Southfield High School in Oakland County, Michigan; and as a frequent consultant and speaker on issues of education, technology, politics, and gaming.  In a much earlier life I worked, variously, as a basketball coach, web developer, bartender, professional typist, mall clown, and semi-professional pinball player.  (No, really!)

You might be familiar with some of the web-based projects I led or was involved with back in the 1990's and early 2000's, including Conflix, the Michigan Student Caucus, the Arab-Israeli Conflict simulation, and dozens more.  I was also one of the core faculty members of the University of Michigan-Flint's Technology and Global Education program, which met each summer in Geneva, Switzerland (some of our projects were awarded a MacArthur Digital Media and Learning award a number of years back).

This summer, I will make a big career move--to Texas, where I will become CEO of Holocaust Museum Houston. One of the largest and most established institutions of its kind, HMH is uniquely positioned to be a world leader in Shoah (Holocaust) education and human rights education, while also taking an active role in fighting for the well-being, safety, and dignity of the Jewish people in the United States and beyond.

I outkicked my coverage by about twenty yards and married the lovely and brilliant Dr. Dolly Kerin Weisserman.  We have two boys: Drew (who graduated from the University of Michigan and is now ensconced in graduate work in Astronomy at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario) and Simon (who you might know from his stint on Top Chef, Jr., Season Two, as a pretty darned good high school basketball player, and now as a student-athlete playing college basketball at Elmhurst University).

In my spare time, I play poker (not as competitively as I once did) and golf (not as often as I probably should); read comic books (I will defend it against all comers as a legitimate artistic genre); tinker (though I miss having a garage to do it in); wish I could still play basketball well and instead obsessively follow the NBA as a form of psychological compensation; engage in frequent study of Jewish history and texts; read science fiction; and collect rubber ducks (accidentally, but still, they've taken over my office).
